Joshua Tree Day/Night Trip with Night Photography Meetup

On this night, the conditions were perfect. It was a new moon and there wasn't a single cloud in the sky. Even the wind was cooperative which is rare inside the park. We started towards Keys View to enjoy the panoramic view of Coachella Valley. In the south was the Salton Sea...in the north, Palm Springs. We then marked a spot to take pictures of stars while it was still light out.
Then we visited Skull Rock and Cholla Cactus Garden before sunset. Watch out for the Cholla Cactus Plants there! Before we left the garden for dinner, two of our photographers had been stuck in the bum by Chollas...no lie.
When we returned to the park after dinner, we quickly set up for several hours of photographing the stars. Here's a sample photo.

This photo shows the north star and literally thousands of other stars swirling in circular form. It's amazing to me to see the earth's rotation in a single still image. Actually, this was over 250 images, taken over 2 1/2 hours, layered on top of each other to provide this time lapse perspective.
