HorseShoe Bend and Monument Valley

Located at the south end of Page, Arizona near Lake Powell is Horseshoe Bend, a horseshoe-shaped curve of the Colorado River. This past October, Jackie, Hanna, and I had the opportunity to photograph this destination while in Page to tour Antelope Canyon.

One of three major u-turn shapes in nature (the others are Dead Horse Point State Park and Goosenecks State Park - both in Utah), the surrounding canyon walls are near 90 degree angles with orangie-red rocks and a green-colored Colorado River. The river comes from Lake Powell just a few miles north contained by Glen Canyon Dam.

To find Horseshoe Bend, head south on I-89 from Page for about 2 miles and look out for a sign on the right. There's a dirt parking lot and a 1.5 mile hike to the edge of the canyon. Best of's free!

If in Page, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to see one of the most photographed scenes in the world...Monument Valley. These two buttes shown below are only a small portion of the Valley where numerous movie scenes were filmed including scenes from Forrest Gump, The Eiger Sanction, Stagecoach, Back to the Future III, MacGyver, Airwolf, and various PlayStation 3 video games.

Monument Valley is located near Four Corners in the Navajo Nation Reservation and is only a 2 hour drive from Page making it a great day trip. Admission to Monument Valley was $5.
